March 31, 2021 Message for Kindergarten Parents

Dear Quincy Public Schools Kindergarten Parents and Guardians,

As you may know, as of March 29, 2021, all Quincy Public Schools students in Grades 1-12 who were enrolled in the hybrid learning model have returned to full time in-person learning five days per week.  At the same time, we have been evaluating options for adding time in the classroom for Kindergarten students who currently attend school in the hybrid model (in person four days per week in either the morning or afternoon session, with remote learning on Wednesdays).  Many parents have requested that Quincy Public Schools restore full-day Kindergarten for the remainder of the school year and the results of the recent Kindergarten Parent Survey reflected this wish.

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education has directed school districts to continue to offer remote learning for all families who wish to remain in that instructional model for the rest of the school year.  In order to staff both a full-time in-person and remote learning model for Kindergarten and keep within safety guidelines for distancing at least three feet in classrooms, students would potentially face new teacher assignments for the third term. Specifically, returning Kindergarten students to school for full-day Kindergarten would impact between 150 and 300 students, both in person and remotely, in terms of changing teacher assignments.

After reviewing the options for Kindergarten with the Elementary School Principals, the QPS          Re-Entry Task Force, and the Quincy School Committee, I am pleased to invite all Kindergarten students currently enrolled in the hybrid model to attend school in person on Wednesday mornings beginning on April 7, 2021.  This will replace the current remote learning on Wednesday mornings and combine the morning and afternoon cohorts in person for 2.5 hours at school.  Elementary School Principals will provide school-specific information including start and end times to families on Thursday, April 1.  Families of students enrolled in the remote learning model may request to attend school in person by contacting their school principal and this transition will begin on April 26, 2021 following the April vacation week.
