Public Hearing

Consistent with the provisions of Chapter 71, Section 38N of the General Laws, the Quincy School Committee held a public hearing on its Fy2012 proposed budget on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the Lloyd Hill Auditorium, Quincy High School. All interested persons were given an opportunity to be heard.

Ms. Jill Gichuhi, mother of a Quincy Public Schools student, President of the Parent Advisory Council for Special Education spoke to the Literacy program. She asked that this program be staffed at a level equivalent to FY2010. The Literacy program truly represents an investment in our school system. Most children will flourish in the core reading program but some will not. The literacy program is essential to provide struggling readers with interventions and instructions needed to help them succeed. Without this system, many students will be referred to Special Education service. The literacy program is an investment in Quincy students. This is a crucial piece of the school system and she requests that they fund this program at a level that allows staffing to equal the FY2010 budget. Also Ms. Gichuhi was disappointed that she did not have prior knowledge of this meeting.

Ms. Tracy Christello, Citywide Parents Council and she reiterated that Citywide parents stand strong that they want to see the Literacy Program restored, restore technology programs at the middle school, the reading program at the middle school, funding for media center books and specialists, community service requirements for high school, standardization of math packets as well as a very strong look at the high school foreign language program. The numbers are too high in those classes. Also, Ms. Christello said she was not aware of this meeting or she would have been here sooner.

Ms. Linda Perry thanked the members for their coming out in the middle of tornado warnings, bad weather. She expressed her disappointment that the taxpayers of Quincy don’t care to come and thank them for all their hard work. She especially thanked Mrs. Bragg for listening to the requests of Citywide and QPAC. Literacy in the elementary school sets the foundation for all the other things that we wind up paying for.

As no one else wished to be heard, the Public Hearing portion of the meeting closed.
